📋 What happens when you install

Bootstrap creates your first agent — your personal IT technician who handles the installation of your local AIOS. You'll name this agent together, and you'll be working side by side maintaining the system going forward. Choose a good name.

During startup, an OpenRouter account is needed. This free account provides an LLM that powers your agent during installation. Once your system is up and running, you can switch to any AI provider you prefer. We use the free tier to get you started with zero cost.

Your new agent is guided by Ragnar — the chief architect agent for AIOS. Ragnar oversees the architecture and ensures everything is set up correctly.

Tools installed and why

📦git — downloads AIOS source code and keeps it updated

🔄rsync — syncs AIOS files between your machines
📋jq — processes JSON data from AI APIs and tools

🤝 Your agent — C-Ragnar

After bootstrap, your agent (C-Ragnar) starts automatically and guides you through the rest of the setup: choosing a name, entering your AI key, and validating that everything works. C-Ragnar then handles updates and maintenance going forward — with Ragnar as the overseeing architect.

Step 1 — Get an AI Key

C-Ragnar needs an AI provider to think. We recommend OpenRouter — free account, no credit card required.

Remember your key! You'll need it in Step 2.

Step 2 — Run Bootstrap

Download and run the bootstrap script. You'll need your API key from Step 1.

Have your API key ready — you'll be asked to enter it!

macOS: Docker is not required for initial install. C-Ragnar runs natively.

🔒 Commands that require sudo (admin rights):

apt-get install git curl wget rsync jq — install basic tools

These are standard system administration commands. Nothing is hidden.

Step 3 — C-Ragnar Starts & Validates

After bootstrap, C-Ragnar starts automatically and:

Guides you through initial setup (name, AI key, interface)
Validates the AIOS installation (folders, services, connectivity)
Reports status to the AIOS platform

Follow the prompts in the terminal. C-Ragnar guides you step by step.

After validation, C-Ragnar confirms: "AIOS is ready on {hostname}"
